Located in Liberal, Kansas, Southwest Medical Center (SWMC) operates as a not-for-profit acute care hospital. The first patient received medical service on August 17th, 1964. Prior to this date, citizens in the area relied on Epworth Hospital for medical care.


Southwest Medical Center is a business entity governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the Board of County Commissioners of Seward County, Kansas, and an administration selected by the Board of Trustees. No taxes are levied by the Board of County Commissioners of Seward County, Kansas, for operating, maintaining, equipping and improving the hospital.


Through the years SWMC has become a regional medical center serving patients from a five-state region of Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico. As the hospital evolves in a changing industry one of our continuing goals is to provide “Quality Healthcare Close to Home.” This means recruiting and retaining highly skilled physicians, investing in state-of-the-art medical technology and providing compassionate patient service.


Liberal, Kansas is a friendly, diverse community. We are centrally located about 3 hours from Amarillo, TX, 5 hours from Red River, NM, 4 Hours from Oklahoma City, OK, and 6 Hours from Denver, CO. We have a local airport that connects to Denver, Colorado and another airport an hour north that travels to Dallas, TX. Our population is 23,000+ and our service area reaches 91,000+ people. Our community continues to expand as new industries are established in our service area. Our public school system has 5 new school buildings that opened in 2017. The Liberal sports teams compete in Class 5A. Seward County Community College and Area Technical School, a 2 year junior college, is located in our community.


Our community offers many avenues to recreation and entertainment. We have many local shops and restaurants. Liberal provides various opportunities for entertainment including the Bee Jays minor league baseball team, various parks, the movie theater, Adventure Bay pool and waterpark, miniature golf, bowling alley, multiple golf courses, Dorothy’s House and Land of Oz, Baker Arts Center, Coronado Museum, and more!
